Some law, anyway...
Coincidentally, the cafe owner that Peterson was leeching WiFi off of didn't even realize that what Peterson was doing was a crime at the time. Neither did the police officer. "I had a feeling a law was being broken, but I didn't know exactly what," Sparta police chief Andrew Milanowski told the TV station.
Watch that free/open wi-fi surfing out there. Crazy....
Wow... I was in Alaska a few weeks ago and was doing just that. In an RV park with my Dad in his motorhome and picked up 4 unsecured Wifi's, was able to use one or another.
Seems like businesses that use home-consumer WiFi routers should be more careful. I have a router that can serve up a webpage for authorization to the resource - never really got into trying it, though.
I wonder if a permit is required by cities for businesses to offer WiFi access, if not they should, and require some sort of security. Then if someone is leeching they can be sure the person illegally gained access to the network via hacking.
